FM350 periodic counting, zero puls resets count

Simotion Posts: 223 Rating: (1)	I saw today in an application that for a FM350 periodic counting was configured. Connected was the A-pulse and Z-pulse of an encoder. The counts per revolution was 360. When looking at the count I saw that it was always reset from 360 to 0. Is this the way it works, when you select periodic counting and you have a Z-pulse, that the Z pulse resets the count? In the program the load value of the counter was 0. When I disconnected the Z-pulse the counter counted over 360 and was not reset. Please confirm if my conclusion is ok. Thanks.

Mostly a sensor is used as a reference point, sometimes the Z pulse of the encoder is used as reference point. In your case, the axis which the encoder is mounted on is rotational and has to go up to 360 to show one complete rotation has happened and it gets reset by Z Pulse. In Periodic Counting, counter goes up till it reaches Upper limit and rolls over unless it gets reset or loaded to another value. Regards, Behnam www.sigmaprocess.ca
