I want to collect data from PLC's to an OPC server and further save this data in a database.
Do any of you have experience with sending data from OPC server to a SQL server?

My first thoughts are using a OPC client and somehow transfer the data to the SQL server. Do you have any tips and Siemens Software to use?

You could use industrial Databridge. This you could also use without WinCC.

But there are special CPs for some Simatic PLCs that could write direct from PLC into SQL Server Database.

Or you use a OPC UA Client and add a SQL ODBC Data connection to write into SQL Server by yourself.

1. I can set up an OPC server

2. Install client on the PC I want to host the SQL Server Database

3. Is "SQL ODBC Data connection"  the part I have to code myself?

The header of the link you posted me is "OPC UA.NET Client for the SIMATIC S7-1500 OPC UA Server.

What about S7-1200 ?  I was considering collecting data from S7-1200's via Ethernet and host the OPC server on a computer.

Is there no difference on the OPC client-side if I host the OPC server from a PC OR PLC as you sent documentation of ?

The main difference is that with TIA V14 and S71500Firmware V2.X you could use an OPC UA Server directly on the Controler so you do not need any OPC Server on a PC.

But with S71200 you need an OPC UA Server on a PC or there are several embedded build in OPC UA Server on the market with industry enclosure.

but OPC UA Server - Client connection is standardised. Only the PLC connection from OPC Server is customized by the manufacturer.

So in your case you need for example an PC with an OPC UA Simatic Net Server and your OPC UA Client Application with the connection to the SQL Server Database.
