Hi,

The 810/820 range were the first Siemens CNC to use standard RS232 pin outs.

I just buy a cable from any computer shop with 9 pin and 25 pin connectors.

I have been 'watching' this thread with some interest.

Does this mean that the RS232 to 'Current Loop' converter is not required? (as required for 115 processors for example) And that the Siemens S5 software on the 'standard' laptop will 'talk' to the com port as normal, but without having to be converted to 'current loop' and that the 810/820 will communicate in RS232 mode also?

And that the 'pin-outs' are as a standard PC "9 pin to 25 pin D socket converter"?
ie:

Signal	9-Pin	25-Pin
Carrier Detect	1	8
Receive Data	2	3
Transmit Data	3	2
Data Terminal Ready	4	20
System Ground	5	7
Data Set Ready	6	6
Request to Send	7	4
Clear to Send	8	5
Ring Indicator	9	22

Also, do you have any idea if a USB to RS232 converter will work in this set-up, or, as with some other applications, does it have to be a 'real' com port?

Pee Ell Sea Posts: 672 Rating: (57)	Hi, I believe the very early 810 controls that had a plc with just one block were current loop but 99% of the 810/820's DO NOT require the V24 to current loop conversion. As to using a USB to RS232 converter I would look on the S5 forum as there appears to be confusion with some people claiming success and others claiming it will not work. Its on my 'to do ' list to try it myself.
