G120 for Centrifuge Basket

Dear Siemens Experts,

I would like to seek your kind expertise and advise here.

We have a VFD replacement project for 132kW Centrifuge Basket Motor in a Sugar Mill. Previously, motor was driven with SINAMIC G120 drive PM240 (6SL3224-0XE41-3UA0) + CU240E-2 (6SL3244-0BB12-1BA1) and a third party (china made) power regenerative controller unit (so called REGEN Unit). In a few month ago, that REGEN unit was burned during the operation and caused G120 damage too. 

At first, we consulted with the regional SIEMENS Drive Specialist (G120 application expert) for replacement option and he proposed us with PM240-2 (6SL3210-1PE33-0AL0) + CU240E-2 (6SL3244-0BB12-1BA1) + IOP-2 (6SL3255-0AA00-4JA2) and Braking Resistor 2.2 Ohm/50kW (6SL3000-1BE32-5AA0). Braking Resistor is offered to replace the REGEN Unit. 

As the SIEMENS specialist proposed, we are offering our replacement solution to client and now we are awarded. But, when we are finally preparing to place our order to SIEMENS, the another product specialist (S120 specialist) from SIEMENS is insisting us not to use G120 drive and recommending to use with S120 Drive (such as S120 SLM + Motor Module + CU320-2 + line choke, etc) instead. The problem is my client has budget constrain and they cannot effort to use S120 SLM drives even though it would be most efficient and appropriate in this kind of application. However, I still hope that G120 + Braking Resistor combination can be a good combination to use in this centrifuge application. 

Hence, kindly advise if there is any possibilities with G120 VFD and application cases in similar application scenario.

My only involvement in sugar processing in the field is remote, from the uk; in managing ‘bigas’, which appeared to contaminate the power control systems and make heat dissipation a great problem.

Yes. I am really disappointed too. At present, we urged SIEMENS THAILAND to work out with their feasible solutions based on G120 option anyway. But, no update yet.

 How much energy would your customer save in one year with S120 respect to G120?

If there is any save due to regenerative mode, then it can be a key point for your customer to understand the S120 solution.

But of course is not easy to let them understand......

 Dear Boletus, 

The customer has no concern on power saving as they don't use the national grid power supply while the sugar mill is in operation. When the mill is in operation, they have 2 x 30T steam boilers and they have their own electrical supply from steam turbines.

It may like as others. The mill is only operating for 3 months out of a whole year due to availability of raw materials (sugarcane). 

I am reading now the Braking Chopper Operation Guideline and feel like G120 + Braking Resistors solution still can be applicable.
