In my work, we do this with digital inputs when we do not need fast response from the drive. If we need it to switch quickly, we use BICO and a spare word in the telegram to activate the change. The profinet telegram updates much faster than digital I/O. Just something to think about if you know in advance the switching needs to happen more predictably, timely, quickly, & reliably (because digital I/O is more likely to fail than a telegram bit).
