Help on right PLC model

maddoc65 Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	Hi everybody, Sorry for my bad english, isn't my native Language. I need some help for finding the right PLC for my scenario. I am a total newbie on PLC. I need a PLC with at least 4 digitaloutput (relays) and2 digital input. The most important thing is a full RS232 port: i need to do something like: PC OPEN SERIAL PC SENDS: TURN ON RELAY1 and COUNT N PULSES ON LINE1 PC is listening on the serial PLC SENDS TO PC: PULSE1, PULSE2.... PULSEN - 1, DONE PC/PLC BOTHCLOSES THE SERIAL PORT Hope i am undestendable. Many, many thanks for hints onthe rightmodel to buy.

You can add to the English your own language if you have doubts. I find this project very interresting. I can not decide for myself what you intend to do; it leaves me with a mystery. I would suggest the S7-200. It will be the easiest.. but there are many challanges. And it is not cheap. I can list all the things you will need to look out for.. but maybe you will find that you can do a better job when NOT using a PLC. If you write me a private message I will tell you more on this. My idea is not Siemens product. If you HAVE to use a PLC, then please let us know. Also consider.. Do you know that you get input / output cards for your PC? Do you know you can use the parallel port as inputs and outputs on your PC? Hope to hear from you again. w

I suggest using a Micro-controllers such as AVR instead of PLC.But, still there are some points to be considered to use it in real industrial case.You may search and contact small groups of engineers who work on such small solutions in vicinity.As I had interest before on ATMEGA series a small one can give you: 32 bit configurable input and output pins at 5 Volt 8 channels with analog to digital conversion only voltage) serial port to be connected to RS232 and RS484 via MAX232, MAX 485 respectively Ease of programming Search and read more about THIS product.

Now that you moved outside the comfort zone: I like what the Ardiuno product and its shields have to offer. RS Components sell these in many countries. Some software is also available to code in flow diagrams. Very useful. w Personally, I am not Expert in Micro-Controllers and hardware related to them.I have some consulting groups to help me and actualize some minor ideas (mainly in regulation).I have seen Ardiuno products and believe they are really good.We have had all experiences with small projects in such products but always Experts(in the field) can really help.Our asking member should search for local supporters(or providers) for such products.

My first version of project is ready... i've used an Arduino leonardo (because I need an HID device too), with a relay board optocoupled. I have 2 sensors (flow- meters) and everything is going ok... but... they doesn't like that solution! So, asked me to use a PLC with serial capability... I've to be honest: we had some problems, electrical, because of heavy induptance on relays and a not so stable communication over the USB cable. An engineer told me to use a PLC for remove these problems and... I like to start learn something new like the PLC The application is written in C# on .net FW 4.5, running on an Windows Embedded 7 S.O. Sometime Arduino get lost... and I have to reset it. Using a 4 relay board with 2 input lines, connected on the parallel port will be nice... I've googl'ed around some days ago but I'ven't found nothing cheap. Many thanks, I am a little confused on the right solution to adopt.. :-)

Another question: is possible to use the programming cable to exchange data programmatically in a PLC < --- > PC scenario ?? Many thanks

Juan, You are 100% correct. Knowing what is required the RS232 ~~board~~ may even not be a real requirement. Ethernet connection could be used instead. I have a problem with the 1200's (expensive TIA) software to suggest it to a new guy. Because the 200 is so "old" there is plenty of tools and help available. Having said that.. If the use of RS232 is not required, only linking the PC.. things change. Please Juan.. I welcome your opinion. I will stand back for you to state your case and help our new member. (no sarcasm meant with this statement) w

maddoc65 Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	Hi William, Using an ethernet connection was an option but I don't like too much. because communication in bi-directional I have to send the start command to PLC and open a socket on PC waiting for feedback... An alternative is polling the PLC but I prefer an event-driven approach...
