highspeed counter

korazy Posts: 10 Rating: (1)	I am looking for help with a CPU 1212C and rotary encoder. I have: Siemens CPU 1212C AC/DC/RLY Incremental Rotary Encoder TRD-N60-RZWD Signal Format: Quadrature output: Phase difference 25 +- 12.5% Blk: OUT A WHT: OUT B ORN: OUT Z BRN: 4.75-40VDC BLU: 0V SHLD: GRND I have the rotary encoder connected to the CPU as such: BLK --> I0.0 ORN --> I0.1 WHT --> I0.2 My CPU HSC_1 is configured (i have tried many configures, this seems to be best but still not right): Type of counting: Counting Operating phase: AB Quadrature 1X Inital counting direction: Count up Hardware inputs: Clock A input: I0.0, Clock B input: I0.1 HSC speed: 100kHz The counting seems to works, but I don't think it's right. If I turn on the PLC, eveything is zero. I hand turn my encoder: turn slightly clockwise, I0.0 turns on, count = 1 turn slightly clockwise again, I0.0 turns off, I0.1 turns on, count = 3, count skipped 2 turn slightly clockwise again, I0.1 turns off, I0.2 turns on, count = 4 turn slightly clockwise again, I0.2 turns off (no inputs on), count = 4 (no change) turn slightly clockwise again, I0.0 turns on, count = 5 turn slightly clockwise again, I0.0 turns off, I0.1 turns on, count = 7, count skipped 6 What is the proper way to connect the rotary encode to the CPU and configure the highspeed counter?

0_Einstein Diamond Expert Joined: 7/7/2010 Last visit: 1/16/2025 Posts: 15539 Rating: (2465)	The HSC1 input wires to I0.0 updates ID1000 with the current count. When you configure the HSC #1 and enable it, you can (with V11 FW 2.2) set it for quadrature input if I recall correctly. When using the portal software, F1 for help, then search for "Configuring High Speed Counters" using the search tab. From there, look in the list of topics for that name (oddly, it does not show that result first in the list....). While looking at the help file, you can use the 'see also' option at the top of the displayed help information for related help topics. These additional help topics should help configure your counter. If you need external reset, the help topics describe what input (I think it is I0.3) is the external hardware reset (like a physical button). You can also use the PLC instruction, CTRL_HSC, to perform the reset operation in logic.

korazy Posts: 10 Rating: (1)	I appreciate the response. I have been through the help many times. I'm new to this and the help seems vary vague to me. I am looking for help/information that is more specific what I am trying to do and some confirmation on what im doing that is right and what is wrong. with my current setup, which isn't correct and i don't know why. with my high speed counter at 0, if I turn my encoder 5 rotations clockwise and rotate it 5 rotations counter clockwise, i'm not back at zero. my counter is in negatives. in other words, if i rotate 1800 degrees clockwise, to get back to zero, i rotate ~1770 degrees counter clockwise.

If it loses pulses in CW direction, you may be turning slower CCW, or maybe not. Regardless of the configuration, it is counting up and down, so the wiring is correct, though it may have noise on the line. When you connect up an o-scope, does it appear noisy? Also, I agree about the documentation. I would suggest contacting Siemens via the "Support Request". I have also seen several HSC configuration threads on these forums. Perhaps a little searching will find the answer before the support request people get back to you. If you have a freq->voltage converter with 0-10VDC output, you might want to use that and wire it to the PLC Analog input for speed, and only use the HSC input to detect direction.

korazy Posts: 10 Rating: (1)	thanks for the responses. turns out i need a jumper cable from the plc ground to the plc input bank common. there was interference with the encoder readings.
