hi

i cant understand concept of homing with any technology axis,i was thinking homing means going to initial position but in one of manual i read homing means knowing physical position.

thanks if someone guide me by practical example

Hello, Enabling, Disabling, Homing, Camming, Jogging are the outmost basic concepts of automation. You should understand them VERY much because all of motion applications require the (almost) total knowledge of these things.

Just 2 words about homing:

You switch on a machine that has one servomotor. That servomotor is at zero degrees at that moment. Because when system is powered on it cannot know where a motor is (unless you have abs encoder on that motor).

But your application requires that when your axis is reading one proximity, it is exactly at zero position.

So you have turned on the machine. Motor is NOT reading the proximity sensor, but its position is 0.0 at this moment.

This is obviously not correct. You need to do this:

Move your motor until you reach the (rising edge of) proximity sensor and stop it.

Tell to your axis "Hey, NOW you are at 0.0 position !"

You have homed your axis. The 0.0 position is coherent with the rising edge of the proximity and you can start your application flawlessly.

Without this procedure you would have ran your application with your motor in a random position, with all the subsequent dephasing problems and bugs.

Homing is not an option.

You do not require it for example when you are running a belt or a rotatory system where position is not important, but only speed must be controlled. In that case your axis can be at 0, at 1000 or where you want, but you just need to governate its velocity.

SIemens , like all the other brands of automation , gives you the Homing command with is really powerful.

Why powerful ? Because it is maniacally accurate. It automatically makes your axis search the proximity, reach it and set the 0.0 position exactly at the rising edge. With the normal commands that you can use (Jog, Stop, etc) you will never obtain such kind of precision.

Obviously the homing command has a million of options (because it's Siemens) when you would just require 5-6 of them. I have described the very very basic concept of Homing, enjoy discovering it better...
