How do you search for text globally?!?

AB_Guy Posts: 3 Rating: (1)	Hi, just one more reason that my title is AB_Guy. I can't find a way to search for text globally! Does the STEP7 software have it? If it does, it is not readily apparent. I need to find the place in a PLC program where a tag is set to a certain value. I know that value is a constant, i.e. the number 12141. But you CAN'T search for anything other than a variable or structure globally! I could look forthe tag it is written to, but the way the program is written, the value of the tag or structure is passed in and out of functions many times. Is there a way to look for text without opening every one of over 200 FBs and FCs? Can you search like this? Hate to say this, but Siemens really seems to S U C K in this area! A lot of Siemens fans say it is soooo powerful, but what good is it if you can't do something simple like find something? Thanks in advance!

Hello AB_Guy "Go To Location" isreally all I need to "follow" a tag through an S7 program, but the Cross Reference can just as well be used for this. Having said that, once in a blue moon I too think that it would be nice to be able todo a global pure text based search throughout the whole program (usually when I want to find out if a particular instruction is used in the program or if I am looking for overall Address Register related usage and stuff like that). While this is not possible from your "normal" Step 7 Editor (not yet anyhow) it is possible to do so from a source file. And here's what you got to do to create one: 1. In the program editor, select the menu command File > Generate Source File. 2. In the dialog box, select the source file folder in which you want to create the new source file. 3. Enter a name for the source file in the text box. 4. In the "Select STEP 7 Blocks" dialog box, select the block(s) which you want to generate as the given source file. The selected blocks are displayed in the right list box. 5. Confirm with "OK." The above is taken straight from chapter 13 of the "Programming with Step 7 manual" (which contains more useful info on what nice and "nasty" things you can do with source files). You should already have thsi manual in the Documentation folder of your SIMATIC Start menu related program group, but it can also be downloaded from HERE. I hope this helps
