How to interface between Siemens and Allen Bradley

swilly Posts: 52 Rating: (4)	Hi. I want to connect a Siemens S7-315 2DP PLC with an Allen Bradley SLC5 PLC. How it can be done? The idea is that S7 is the master and the Allen Bradley is the slave. I don't want to buy modules from Allen Bradley because I don't have space, so I want to connect using the ports that have this CPU: RS232 and DH485. Do you know if exist a module in Siemens S7-300 that can act as a master of the Allen Bradley?

Silver Member Joined: 8/10/2006 Last visit: 8/13/2024 Posts: 298 Rating: (29)	Swilly, This is a tongue-in-cheek reply The PLC5 is so long in the tooth, rip it all out and replace it with S7-300. If your PLC5 is failing on parts, you could probably do a cost analysis on it and discover the retrofit would pay for itself in a short time. (Perhaps as short as 12 months!) Siemens makes a RIO master for the S7-400 series, which could work for you if you wanted to convert the PLC5 racks into remote I/O, but that is useful only if you have a S7-4xx PLC. Somewhere I have a PDF manual on the unit, PM me and I'll dig deeper for it if you're interested. Still, if that was worth considering, I'd rip it all out and convert the AB I/O into ET200 devices on Profibus or Profinet. If you have SLC500 remote I/O racks, the SST Remote Profibus scanner can act as AB Remote I/O rack masters, which you can then completely "own" by your S7 system. Unfortunately, this is not yet the case with Logix5K.

Jesper Pedersen Posts: 279 Rating: (30)	The mentioned SST module can work as either DP slave or DP master (different modules !). Itcannot work standalone, but is a module in the SLC rack where the regular SLC CPU exchanges the necessary data via the M0 and M1 files. This is by far the easiest way to get fast, reliable, directcomms between the two PLCs. unimogman, I would like to hear about that module that connects an S7-400 to an AB RIO network. Maybe you are thinking of a CP441 with a loadable DF1 driver. This is something quite different.

J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (412)	Dear UnimogMan, are you sure about the IM 466??? I doubt it, I have never heard about such a unit, I only know the IM 467 which is a DP Master comparable with the CP 443-5 Extended. Best regards J_Bell

Jesper Pedersen Posts: 279 Rating: (30)	Ahhhhhh that explains it. Then there was a profibus module from SST or Hilscher in the AB PLC. Working with both AB and S7, I was surprised to know that a direct converter from S7 to AB RIO had slipped my attention.
