Using TIA Portal v16 and WinCC Advanced, we need to exchange data with an ERP system. The process is pretty complex, so I'm writing a .NET service to handle all the back and forth communication. 

Right now, I'm using file to communicate between WinCC and my app. A VBScript is triggered and write into a flat-file some values, which the C# app read.

The result of the C# operations are written into a SQL DB and WinCC read this to update HMI.

Is there a way to be more efficient, like reading/writing directly tags in WinCC using some .NET libraries?

I would suggest you look at the open-soure lbraries from SNAP 7, they will provide support for Ehernet communications with Siemens PLCs and operating panels over C# .NET applications.
