how to update the S5 plc s.w.

wghu Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	I never use s5 plc, but now I have a task to modify the old s5 plc project. some guys tell me that the s5 plc software is stored in EPROM card, if I want to download a new s5 project, first I need erase the EPROM program via ultraviolet lamp. is that true? If I just use the STEP5 V7,2 software and a communication cable, whether I can update the s5 s.w. or not? which is the standard device for erase the S5 EPROM card?

Ammy Platinum Member Joined: 4/19/2008 Last visit: 1/17/2023 Posts: 1525 Rating: (159)	Hi Wghu, First tell me which S5 PLC you are going to used. depend on CPU it defind the you requierd to modified program without EPROM. for Erasing the EPROM you required the any local ultraviolet eraser, for copy the program you have to required Field PG or old PG720 / PG 740. in that you can find the inbuilt EPROM writer. Ammy.

wghu Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	the CPU type is S5-100U, and I use SIMATIC Field PG. where is the inbuilt EPROM writer? is it located in the left side or the right side of the Field PG?

naah Posts: 76 Rating: (8)	Hi, Changing the program of S5 PLC is not only through erasing EPROM. EPROM is used to store the program and some data blocks. You must check, if the desired block is in EPROM or not? If the block is in EPROM, trying to change it cause error message that shows it is not possible. If the block is in RAM, you may change it using STEP5 SW. If the block is in EPROM, use the following procedure to change it: - turn off the power of CPU - Pull out the EPROM - Turn on PLC - Change the desired block using STEP5 sw( You will get no error message0 - Turn off PLC - Place the EPROM back in slot - Turn on PLC After final modifications, you need to erase the EPROM and reprogram it using a PG or EPROM interface for PC. In case you do have an EEPROM in your 100U, you can copy the program onto it via the 100U (i.e. no need for UV eraser nor EPROM burner). Here are the part numbers for 100U EEPROM's: Memory submodule (EEPROM) 1024 statements 6ES5 375-0LC11 Memory submodule (EEPROM) 2048 statements 6ES5 375-0LC21 Memory submodule (EEPROM) 4096 statements 6ES5 375-0LC31 Memory submodule (EEPROM) 8192 statements 6ES5 375-0LC41 and attached is the procedure on how to use the 100U to copy the program into an EEPROM (courtesy of Siemens100U manual).
