Basically, when a client requires pulse inputs for a flow meter signal that means HSC inputs, right?

What is the difference between PosInp(a module in the catalog), Count(a module in the catalog)  and HSC (a feature in the HF DI module)?

So if I select the S71500 32 HF DI module (6ES7 521-1BL00-0AB0) , it will have 2  HSC inputs with 1 khz frequency. (please find attached image)

Did I understand that right?

If yes, if I have the requirement of  8 Pulse input, that will mean I will have to buy 4 HF modules (4 HF modules x2 HSC each = 8 HSC) or is there a better option to go with? and would the HSC inputs here be the first 2 bits? because in TIA V13 SP1 hardware configuration there is nothing special in the configuration for those 2 inputs (paramatrization)

I have tried siemens customer support twice and in both they reply with "we are after sale support" which makes it hard for us the newbies.

I suggest you get yourself a COMPACT type PLC. There you have x6 HSC already available as part of the PLC. Thereafter you will have to use technology modules. Note also you may require the use of Technology Objects too.

No the DI card does not give the S7-1500 the HSC ability.
Please read the links I gave you which explains.

The HSC under the S7-1500 works under a different rule book than that of the S7-1200. There is a technology object for counting under the S7-1500. Experiment with it yourself and see what you get.

What I do not know is what the limit is for the S7-1500 when it comes to HSC. I do not know if you can have more than 6 on one PLC. Mostly we have ET200's spread out through the system doing that job.

If the pulse rate is slow enough, you can use interrupts (I suggest timed interrupts) to count the inputs with DI cards. It is not absolutely required to use HSCs, but it is required to have a short scan cycle for the inputs that is used for the task.

So if none of the flow rate pulses are more than say 200Hz, you can have a single time interrupt scanning the inputs (remember using :P postfix) at 1ms rate. A faster rate is also possible with the S7-1500.. but the DI card may not want it.

I suggest you start a new thread and ask the question: "How to monitor x9 pulse type flow meters with one S7-1500 PLC". Remember to give the expected peak pulse frequency.

It seems as though my information is not accurate and not complete..
I apologise for that.

The high function (HF) modules can be used for high speed counting, as you started the post. The 16 input card (6ES7 521-1BH00-0AB0) will also work for this.

The trick is that it should be the newest version of the card (V2.1). See also the attached picture for tips on the configuration. Note that you will need to load the required HSP (hardware service pack) to add the needed card version into TIA Portal V13 SP1.

I further recommend you to get the {big} manual:
s71500_et200mp_manual_collection_en-US.pdf
The document will be most helpful for future projects.
For this project of yours - look at the subjects with "counting" as headings.

My dear fellow.. honestly I am guessing here.
You should really get in contact with someone in the know as <mopS04> suggests.

I also have no idea at which frequency you will need to measure, as you have not given any indication. The instrument will go up to 1kHz, but how much of the capacity will you use?

If it was me, I would get the COMPACT type to get x6 HSC onboard on the PLC and then look into getting some extension cards. I have no idea what is less priced to use.

As said before, if the frequency from the flow meters are slow enough, I would even consider doing it without the HSC functions and drive it with interrupts.

Because I do not know the S7-1500 well enough to consult you, whatever I tell you will pull you in the ditch and only frustrate you more. Get in contact with the nearest Siemens agent. Let them understand well that Rockwell / Omron / GE / Toshiba / .. has a lesser priced system to get the sales guys to do their job proper.

What I do know is that buying x5 HF cards is not the cost effective answer.
