search der WinCC help for "Notes for bitnumber graphics list". There is a short description and an example.

It seems when bit selection is active the bit with least significance is used to show the configured text respectively graphic.

I tried a small experimentfor you. The other options should work the same.

We have a graphic list ("Selection" = "Bit number (0-31) with four entries on the Bits 1,2,3 and 4, nothing on 0 and nothing above 4. Graphic I/O-field with the graphic list and connected integer tag.

1a) "Bit selection" = deactivated,
no default value

tag value - set bits (4,3,2,1,0) --> shown Picture of bit

0   - 00000 --> Cactus Screen
2   - 00010 --> Picture of bit 2
4   - 00100 --> Picture of bit 4
8   - 01000 --> Picture of bit 8
16 - 10000 --> Picture of bit 16
24 - 11000 --> Cactus Screen
6   - 00110 --> Cactus Screen
14 - 01110 --> Cactus Screen

---> If more than 2 bits are set, then nothing is shown

There:

Well, when you do a clean configration of your graphic list, then it doesn't matter.

--> You only have one bit set at a time, the rest is 0, you don't access values that aren't configured in your list/you have some option in the list for every possible value and you have a working connection to the PLC, if you use a PLC tag.

It only matters if you don't have a connection or Access unconfigured values or have several bits set at once.
The behavior to that is then different depending on weather ypu activated or deactiveted bit selection and on weather you have  set a default value.

So the difference for no default value is that, when activated and you do something of the above, there is something visible instead of the "nothing found" placeholder.

The difference with a default value is that, when activated and you do something of the above, there is something other visible than when the bitselection is deactivated.
