Installing PCS7 on VMWare

Due to working on many different projects (PLC's and SCADA)all the time, Im considering creating a VM and installing the PCS7 and licenses on this. Has anyone done this before and if so whats the best Max Disc space to allocate to the Machine? I know what the requirements are for PCS7 but instead of blowing out the Max Disc space unnecessarilly as I only use it for moderate sized projects.

Yoga Shankar Posts: 288 Rating: (22)	A Disc space size of 20 GB is more than optimal for your requirements. Its is advisible to create 2 partitions of 20GB each. By this, youo will be able to increase the virtual memory in the VM environment witout sacrificing storage space. Further, you should also create a shared folder in the VM which will be shared with the host machine. store your work backup archives in this and you will have more space in the VM for your current projects.

Silent Bob Posts: 836 Rating: (100)	Hi, it's pretty common to use PCS 7 with VMware. But be aware, this is not released by Siemens. I use it quite often if i need to test something with different versions of PCS 7. Once I had a ES on the Host, a OS in one VMware and one Client in a VMware on a other computer... next level You need to have enough RAM and CPU power, because it slows down the system a lot. I have a laptop with Intel Core I7 and 8 GB of RAM (Win7 64 bit). I provided 4 GB to the VMware and its running fine and stable (before I just had 4 GB of RAM and the host got froozen sometimes). Wich disk space you are allocating is depending on the version of PCS 7 and windows. A WinXP with PCS7 V7.1 don't need as much space as Win7 with PCS 7 V8.0. Currently I am running PCS 7 V7.1 SP3 on Windows XP SP3. I have following configuration: Disk file 1, operating system, programs, PCS 7: 30GB Disk file 2, PCS 7 projects, archived PCS 7 projects: 5GB If you like to use different VMs you also can create a seperate disk file for the licences (just some megabytes). Be aware that your licence is lost, if the file crashes. My Disk file 1 is only 15GB on the host, because thats the space wich is used in the guest system. It will allocate more space (on the host system) if it is needed. So the 30GB are the maximum size the file can grow. If the limit is reached, it can't grow further. So be aware to make it big enough, otherwise you will run out of space. There are possibilitys to resize the file, but it a pain in the ass. And always have in mind: The ammount of diskpace the VM needs can grow, if you make snapshots of the VM status. Conclusion: You can run PCS 7 in VMware. Don't make the disk files to small. Pay attention to your licences. Have enough RAM on you host system. Have enough disk space on your host (it can grow up to 50 GB pretty easy). Thats it for the moment. Think about it. If you have further questions, feel free to ask. I think a lot of people have experience in running PCS 7 in VMware.

But you need VMware workstation as far as know. Itsa singel file on you actual operating system, but in the guest system its like a harddisk, wich you can seperate in different partitions. When you create a virtual machine, you can choose the location. In that location are also the disk files (you can change it, if you like). So you can choose every partition for creating a VM, also a external drive.
