Interfacing a Siemens PLC + OPC server to Network Management System - based on SNMP!

Suppio Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	We are new here and having trouble to find the right solutions. We like to read i/o data from a PLC, as easy as possible, into our Network Management System (NMS). Standard procedure in our ict-monitoring business: we read SNMP values directly from a hardware device that has a snmp-agent embedded. As I understand sofar PLC's do not have snmp-agent itself on board for reading i/o data. So we need an OPC-server that we intend to run on a Siemen Box Pc (SIMATIC IPC227D). Sofar we understand. But now it is getting dark to me: - What opc-server should we choose? (Note: it must be a generic Siemens solutions that can talk to a wide range of Siemens plc's, and we will read approx 10 io-data (tags?) per site. - what is the beste way to interface to our NMS platform? We can interface on many ways like: snmp, syslog, database, logfiles etc... The purpose of this all is to monitor a number of customers and bring this in to one dashboard per site and overall. Storing Qos values and calculate sevice levels. Hope that someone can give me some tips or direction, thanks.

Suppio Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	In addition: We have tested already a solution based on a OPC-server (simulation) + SNMP Agent for OPC server. (from Matrikon) That works fine. Now we are looking for a similar solution based on Siemens products. Please note that we are not looking for a SNMP OPC Server, we are looking for a SNMP Agent for OPC. Thanks

KEPServerEX can connect directly to the PLC or to a 3rd party OPC Server and make the data available to your NMS. I have attached the SNMP Agent for KEPServerEX helpfile for you to review. Suppio Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	Thanks Erik, I will look into this Kepware product. We now considering the use of an own build box-pc based on windows embedded os. The Siemens Box we have under test now might be too complex for the needs we have. A simple mini-pc with opc-server and snmp-agent, for a reasonable price, is just what we need. I will post our finding here...

Suppio Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	Hi all, Many thanks for these links and information - I will investigate these further. We have done some tests now with the SNMP-agent feature of Matrikon and Kepware. Both are working ok in a simulated OPC server envrionment. Also did some tests with a datalogger sending its output to a textfile. That also is working ok. But the best (and cheapest) option appears to be reading the tags-values via SNMP directly from the Siemen Box IPC. So, still need some work to do here. Thanks so far. Suppio Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	It took us some time to investigate the several options. We also tried to find more information about a Siemens SNMP Agent for OPC that is available in the USA (dept. Building Automation) but not in Europe as far as we understand. We followed the earlier suggested option of Kepware. We installed a Kepware DA-client + SNMP Agent on the IPC227D. (it appears to be the cheapest solutions, at least for the moment) After installing all the extra software on the IPC227D system is quite bussy when starting up, but after a while it is running OK. Before we could install any of the additional software on the IPC227D we needed to update the Installshied software because that was completely outdated.(OS is: Windows XP Embedded SP3) We will continue to test this setup and will post further results here in the near future again. regards, A.Pietersen
