My general understanding in s7-1500's in the I/O modules are hot-swappable. Obviously, if your project requires a module to operate properly and continuously, you would stop it so you could swap out the module. With redundancy as an option for the s7-1500's in the "H" family, you can design and program the system to continue operating while swapping out a module. This is a good thing for large process systems that cost much time and/or money to stop and restart. That said, this is an early version of redundancy for the s7-1500 family. If it were me, I would not stake my company's reputation and design using that on a large scale system without having tested it in-house for an extended period of time, creating and solving all potential problems with handling of module / channel failure, and module swapping.
