Is it possible to order Simatic IPC with windows 7 32 bit version?

is it possible to order Simatic IPC with windows 7 32 bit version? I can see that most configurations come with windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.

Please, have a look at the attached picture. So IPC 547G for sure supports Windows 7 32 bit and can be ordered with preinstalled windows 7 ultimate 32 bit.

I have examined the configurations of both IPC 347E and IPC 547G in details and I can say that for my particular application IPC 347E is more suitable since there is no real need for such high performance or that number of interfaces that IPC547G offers.

I have also found out that IPC347E is available in 7 different configurations ( http://w3.siemens.com/mcms/pc-based-automation/en/industrial-pc/rack-pc/simatic-ipc347e/pages/default.aspx ), but win 7 32 bit is not an option with IPC347E.

Is it possible to find out whether it is possible to install win 7 32 bit on this machine? I have some video processing application that must run on the same machine and this application is not compatible with 64 bit version of windows.

I'll spend more money on buying IPC547G buying HW options that I really don't need just because I need 32 bit version of windows 7 on the machine. Optimal solution for me would be to buy IPC 347E with installed win 7 32 bit or to buy it without OS and then to obtain win 7 32 bit ultimate separately.

Therefore, it would be more than helpful if I know whether is possible the following:

1. Order IPC347E without OS but with drivers for win 7 32bit (I doubt this since it is not offered in standard configurations)

2. Oder Windows 7 32 bit embedded for Simatic Rack PC and install additionally.

it's a tough one. Short answer to your question is no! At least, there is no so called "Siemens approved" way to do this. Pleas have a look at Document ID number: A5E38025024-AA"Operating instructions for ipc347e.

 So, here you can see that IPC 347E normally comes without OS or with win 7 64 bit. When it comes without OS, it comes with DVD with documentation and drivers. And the drivers are most probably for windows 7 64 bit (almost 100% sure, but I never worked with IPC 347E, hopefully someone on this forum can confirm this). Drivers for 64 bit cannot work with win 32 bit OS.

However there could be a workaround but keep in mind this is not supported by Siemens. You can order the rack PC without OS and then additionally install windows 7 32 bit on it. The problem in this case are the drivers. Siemens dosen't produce motherboards and CPUs for Simatic Rack PCs, so more or less all components (motherboard, CPU, memory, HDD) are bought on the market, assembled and tested. So you can find the drivers on web site of the manufacturer of the motherboard for example. If you plan to use onboard graphics and network then, all you need is the drivers from the manufacturer of the motherboard.

This could work but there is no guarantee and this is not officially supported way.  It depends highly on the actual application for which  you want IPC to use. You can try if you like. I myself managed some long time ago to install windows 7 simatic embedded on older IPC which was previously ordered with windows XP. Since this IPC was connected to the office LAN, with the end of XP support from Microsoft, I installed win 7 on this machine (luckily all other software could run on windows 7) in order to have all security updates and patches.

I also don't understand myself why  there is no Win7 32 bit support for 347E, but there is for 547G, but this is Siemens :)

 Which software for 32 Bit does not work on 64 Bit system? Shouldn't it be the other way? 64 Bit systems should handle 32 Bit applications just fine?

This video processing software uses legacy components and DDE Network connections that are no longer support in 64 bit environment.

Normally all modern software written for 32 bit machines can be executed on 64 bit machines. But if some communication models are based on DDE links that (presumably) have 16 bit, then all bets are off.
