Is the TIA Portal Stable to use with S7 300?

I thinking in migrate from Step7 v5.5 and begining to project new softwares with TIA Portal to S7 300 CPU's. It's a good idea? It's Stable, good comunications, online, speed to download, upload, go online.. Regards

SO my observations: Quite stabile software as we already have SP2 Slower that Step-7 v5.5. I run it on Field PG-M3 with i5 CPU and it is definitely slower than regular Step-7 Online monitoring and mainly all online functions are slow as hell User interface is very nice and very intuitive You should be ready for use symbolic programming with V11 There is still some bugs, but they do not interfere with the programming and will be fixed in near future Very nice to have HMI integrated in the same portal. Saves lots of time S7-400 H CPUs still not supported, but will be with V12 release as I know In general I'm happy that moved from Step-7 to TIA

Also, my PG is not so old and bad, but still it's very very slow if comparing with Step-7 v5.5. Still my choice is TIA . Programming is much more faster with it as it has superb (in my oppinion) interface.

I've used a lot of PLC programming software and TIA Portal is the hands-down slowest software for developing, troubleshooting, and integrating PLCs into control system. However, I would rather use the portal software than Step 7 as that would feel like taking a few steps backwards at the expense of a speedy interface (relatively speaking). I use V11 SP2 and it is very stable for my uses.

I suspect that this fancy GUI look is stopping the system. But that's just a guess. It would be nice to have oportunity to switch it to windows style look, but to have the same interface. That would be perfect. I don't like that dark grey look with own icons and so on. It could be classic windows style just the same interface as now. Maybe it could be faster. Furthermore, I think on i7 with lots of ram it is still the same slow. Maybe someone of you tried to run this software on really powerfull PC ? I just like to know HW requirement on which TIA runs the same level as Step-7.

TomDeWou Platinum Expert Joined: 11/15/2006 Last visit: 1/20/2025 Posts: 1319 Rating: (176)	I guess that on online functions, the TIA Portal just wants to show too much status informations at once, for example if switching online it checks every block in the blocks folder - I think this is one part which might take some time, but I don't know exactly. What I think the most important thing is that Siemens is already working on that issue - hopefully they will have success soon

I like the simplicity of S7 V5.x programming screen. I really don't see reason for so many "embellishments" in a programming environment. Speed is more important than beauty! Kind regards, Berg

Wulfgar Posts: 42 Rating: (3)	I've now used TIA V11 SP2 (update 4) on 4 small machines using S7-1200 PLCs. I think TIA is better than Step 7 5.5 as it is more intuitive to program and does not require you to know all the cryptic formats for constants and hard coded addressing allowing symbolic programming finally. But it is still buggy and ackward to use on production equipment. The biggest problem is the lack of the ability to upload from the PLC. So when TIA crashes and loses your changes you either have to revert to your previous save and download that to the PLC or compare online/offline changes. Then manually change your offline program to get it to match and then download as even after you make the changes it still will say they do not match. So save often. And yes as others point out it is slow as hell and the project files are huge (35meg compressed on a very small lean cell). But TIA makes for a good excuse to ask the boss for a shiny new laptop.

In general, the size should be reduced automatically from time to time, but yes, there projects are bigger than in Classic (at least for STEP7).
