danw Gold Expert Joined: 3/28/2010 Last visit: 11/30/2024 Posts: 1090 Rating: (215)	The Mag 5000 spec sheet defines the 4-20mA output as an active output that can drive up to 800 ohms of loop resistance. The maximum cable length depends on the cable's resistance. The total loop resistance has to be below 800 ohms. The loop resistance consists of the analog input resistance (typically 250 ohms, but it can be anywhere from one ohm to 500 ohms) and the wire/cable resistance. For example, if your loop uses 250 ohms for the input resistance, then the total wiring resistance can be as high as 550 ohms, taking into account that a loop is 2 wires where each of the two wires has resistance; a maximum of 225 ohms in the leg out and 225 ohms in the leg back. You can find wire/cable resistance tables that show the resistance per meter or per foot for various wire sizes and calculate the maximum distance a given cable will support for the conditions.
