Max Address Settable in Profibus DP

I understood from the literature that max no of devices can be connected in to DP n/w is 126. But whether the addressing is from 0 to 125 or from 1 to 126? I have set the HSA to 126. But when Im config ABB instrument in DP n/w the max settable address shows only 125. Can anyone calrify the above? -Kanag

fritz Diamond Expert Joined: 10/7/2005 Last visit: 3/18/2025 Posts: 3042 Rating: (1061)	Hell Kanag's I'll try to clarify: Address 0 is reserved for Profibus configuration/diagnostic tools and you will (should) not be allowed to use thisaddress in your DP Master configuration tool. Adress 126 isthe "default" address for DP Slaves whichsupport address setting via software rather than via DIP switches (typically found in Profibus PA devices, but DP devices can support this too). Address 127 is abroadcast address (used by the DP Master to send for example "clear", "sync" and "freeze"commands which are then evaluted by all Slaves on the bus). This leaves you with adresses1 up to including 125as the "useable" addresses for the Profibus configuration. As you will need at least one DP Master, it also leavesyou witha maximum of 124 DP Slaves. Last but not least, the HSA (Highest Station address) is only of relevance for the DP masters, and is NOT the highest DP Slave address. The HSA determines up to which address the DP Master "scans" the bus to find otherDP Master. I hope this helps

As you mentioned, ABB also claims that the Profibus DP Transmitter with default address of 126 is configurable via software and doesnt have any DIP switches. ABB engineer asking to configure the device with 126 as address and to download the HW config to the device. Now my problem is Im using S7414H CPU with Y-link to connect to the DP Transmitter and not able to set 126 as address. ABB is not providing solution for this. How to config the DP transmitters which has only s/w setting (126 address) from Siemens PLC? -Kanag

You have a number of choices Kanag, but they all boil down to usage of a so called Class 2 DP Master (your can not do this from your S7 PLC which is a Class1 DP Master). Siemens PDM (Process Device Manager) is one toolthat can be used for this purpose (and commonly a "fixed" part of the Control system installations when PA devices are used). you can find out more about PDMin thismanual: PDM V6.0 The Process Device Manager manual Alternatively, you can get Profibus troubleshooting tools whichcater for this too (and have the advantage toalways come in handy for Profibus installation verification/troubleshootingon this and other projects). My favourite choice forthis is Procentec's Profitrace(if you opt for this solution make sure to buy the package that includes ProfiCaptain which is the Class 2 capable DP Master, you can find out more aboutthis at www.procentec.com). Kanag's Posts: 54 Rating: (2)	Hi Fritz Atlast our engineers could able to change the default address of the Tx from the accessible nodes of simatic manager. The followings are the steps: 1. Set Profibus communication in "Set PG/PC interface" 2. Go to accessible nodes 3. Go to PLC menu-Profibus-assign profibus address 4. It displays all profibus nodes in the network 5. Select the node and change the address Hope this helps others. -Kanag
