Memory Card use in PLC S7-400 and S7-300

Clodoaldopuc Posts: 16 Rating: (0)	For both S7-300 and S7-400, Can I use memory Card (Eprom) to increase load memory and backup(plc=>save project on memory card) and save (Work and load memory) for restart in case of power down? In Resume I want to know if I can use memory card for 3 tasks above, in the same time.

gre_m Posts: 947 Rating: (45)	s7-300 not work without MMC memory card. (Other memory card -no MMC-have very old CPU from 300 seriies. MMC card you can write in Run and stopmode. s7-400 eprom card you can write only in stop mode.

How can I get an overview of the S7-400 memory concept? Clodoaldopuc 1-Increasing load memory In S7-300, neither the load memory nor the work memory is expandable. For example check the specs. of S7315-2DP In S7-400, the integrated load memory of the CPU can be expanded by the memory card (Check the specs. of 414-3). Normally, you should care more about the work memory capacity not the load memory. Clodoaldopuc 2- backup You can backup your project on the memory card if you have enough space. Clodoaldopuc 3- And use it for restart plc in case of power down. This is always the case in S7-300 while in S7-400 you need either RAM memory card with backup batteries ora FLASH memory card. Clodoaldopuc All in the same time Yes, all at the same time. Best regards, H-H

I said the load memory is not expandable since it's not located in the CPUto be expanded. Storage Concept for S7-300 CPUs and C7 Devices Location of load memory The load memory is located on the MMC and corresponds precisely to the size of the MMC. Best regards, H-H

dchartier Grandmaster-Expert Joined: 9/27/2006 Last visit: 9/10/2024 Posts: 12282 Rating: (2683)	Hello Arvan; As shown in the links proposed earlier by H-H, a backup battery will be required iof the load memory of the CPU is based on RAM technology. This wad the case for the older S7-300 CPU (now load memory is based on a MMC, therefore battery is not required) and it is still the case for S7-400 PLCs using a RAM card (there is a possibility of using an EEPROM card instead, and that does niot need a battery support).. If your present CPU needs a battery to support the load memory and you do not have one in the PLC, do not remove power from the CPU or you will lose the program loaded to the PLC and it will not go to Run mode when powered up, until you download the program once more from the programming device..
