migrating from S5 to S7, IM463-2 to use old S5 I/Os with new S7-400 CPU

ecsiberg Advanced Member Joined: 10/25/2005 Last visit: 9/17/2024 Posts: 25 Rating: (1)	Hello All I am migrating a project from S5 to S7 using IM463-2 to use old S5 I/Os with new S7-400 CPU. Now my question is about analog modules VALUES REPRESENTATION. Once I will have the I/O connected and addressed in the PLC CPU P area, what about numeric representation of analog reading? do they still have the S5 numeric coding (e.g. 512-2560 for 4..20 mA with 498-AA51 adapters) or the IM463-2 will convert the reading in S7 numeric coding ( 0-27648) ? in the 1st case I will have to keep the old scaling function (0..2048) --> Eng. Units in the 2nd case I will have to change all analog scaling as (0-27648) --> Eng. Units that 2nd case will imply a quite significant change in the SW code, in my project is the question clear enough? please advice asap thanks in advance to anyone could help me

fritz Diamond Expert Joined: 10/7/2005 Last visit: 10/5/2024 Posts: 3024 Rating: (1054)	Hello ecsiberg anyS5 AI that are readvia the IM 463-2 will still have the S5 numeric coding (e.g. 512-2560 for 4..20 mA with 498-AA51 adapters). Apart from writing your own scaling Block for them, you'll also find ready made onesin the "S5-S7 Converting Blocks" library for Step 7. Saying that, I loathe (and refuse to) using any of the Blocks in this library as they are programmed like they were in the S5 which for example means that MB200 up to 255 are used as scratchflags in them. I also agree with you to avoid use of old style FCs from library in the program, unless it is really necessary The fact that the numeric format will be passed unchanged from/to analog modules to/from the CPU will unfortunately mean that I will have some additional work to do in this project. Now I am working offline. The Customer required a migration of the PLC system from S5 to S7 in 2 steps The 1st step is to replace the central rack and the CPU to migrate the PLC code only, in this step we are going to use the IM 463-2 to interface S7-400 with S5 I/O racks The 2nd step will be to replace later ALL the S5 I/O modules with S7 ones In this second step I will have to adjust all the Analog Values reading and writing instructions/functions again, changing to S7 coding What do you think?

Been there, seen it anddone it myself dear ecsibergand there is absolutely nothing wrong with this staged upgrade approach (which can even be done more selectively by only partial S5 to S7 I/O rack or module migration if available downtime is short). And yes, once you replace the S5 AI cards withS7 AI cards,you will have to go for S7 AI value scaling (minor code change and barely worth mentioning).
