Is it (going to be) possible to use older iot2050 advanced devices as an official MC element by installing new firmware? And the same question vice versa: MC -> freely programmable IOT? I think the IOT2050 could be very valuable as official MindSphere gateway, especially with 4G connection enabled.

The other way might also not be possible. At least this was the situation for MindConnect IoT2040 vs. SIMATIC IOT2040. The IOT20x0 is just the device a new product "MindConnect IoT20x0" is based on.
