Modbus rs485 - how to speed up my communication?

We have a project in the power plant that we need to connect 18 units of revenue metering thru profibus communication and 20 unit of protection relay thru modbus RS-485. For modbus rs485, we are experiencing some delay in communication. There are 20 units of modbus slave connected to master. Can you give me a suggetion how to speed up the communication? or is it practical to convert everything to modbus tcp/ip or profibus? Your prompt response will be highly appreciate. Thanks in advance.

But the long and the short of it is that you are using a serial interface physical layer, which means that the data throughput is quite low and hence speed / update will be slow. Modbus TCP will be somewhat quicker.
