Modbus TCP communication between s7-1200 and an inverter

Heisenberg95 Posts: 37 Rating: (0)	Hello SIOS community, So I have : - The s7-1200 plc (CPU 1217 DC/DC/DC) that doesn't use OPC. - An inverter which is a black box (it contains integrated sensors that can't be reached or identified). The only thing I know about it is that it can communicate using a non -standard Modbus protocole. The measures of the inverter are usually sent to a computer (every 5 mins), stored in a memory card and then treated and converted to .csv files manually. This is bad, because it won't allow me to control the system I use! In fact, I want to acquire those measures and use them in real-time (using a certain delay/step I would define). So I'm looking for a solution and I need your opinion guys. The first idea that came to my mind, is to use the Mb_client block on tia portal (use my plc s7-1200 as a client) ,connect both the plc and the inverter to a local network, and then use Modbus TCP/IP for data acquisition . Is it a good idea ? What I'm asking you guys is : 1/ Is the Mb_client block a good solution ? 2/ As I said before, the modbus protocole of the inverter is not standard. Will it be a problem ? 3/ Do I have to create some server connection on my computer or is my solution sufficient ? (I mean do I have to get the measures first on my pc and then send them to my plc ? Or is it okay to get them directly from my inverter to my plc ?) I can give more informations on the problem if needed, and I hope you guys can help me. Best regards.

Without manual of the inverter (protocol description) it is not possibe to give you a clear answer. Regards, Kaulquappe

Can you give me an idea on how to create a server on my computer, get the measures on it ,and acquire them in tia portal v15 (all of this in real time using the delay I want or at least control it) ? Assuming I've never used this kind of servers/connections and the s7-1200 doesn't support OPC (it's okey because I'm not familiar with it). Any suggestions please ?

Is it in the Mb_Data_Addr input of the Mb_client block ? And can I read from multiple registers at the same time (define multiple registers addresses) ?

yes,

but note:

To read or to write Modbus registers in each case use register numbers reduced by the offset of 1. Example: Modbus register address = Modbus register number in SunSpec Modbus profile – offset = 40001 - 1 = 40000

yes

Please note: you need MB_Unit_ID=126 to access SMA devices and MB_Unit_ID=3 to transfer SMA Grid Guard code.
