Hi there, from your description using the S7-1200 motion control would be the way to go. With this you can use the PLC's HSC channel as encoder input, the technology object can also work with an analog output for the setpoint. You can then parametrize the technology object so it fits the hardware and mechanics you have, also parametrize some of the functions it offers (e.g. referencing, default and maximum dynamics, etc.), then just use the MC instructions for this in the program. For one this is the dedicated solution for positioning in this PLC, so no kind of workaround like using the PID would be (though this might work, but why going the extra mile?). Also once you understood how the motion control on the S7-1200 works, you will also understand most of the S7-1500 motion control, since this is very similiar (one could even say it's almost equal, but there are some differences).
