MPI to Profibus

I have about 150 S7-200 CPU's with one MPI/PPI free port. The main purpouse of the application is to transmit data to a 317 -2PN/DP CPU. What I want to do is to split these CPU's into 6 subnetworks and convert them from MPI to Profibus via CP 342–5 (6GK7 342-5DA02-0XE0) and then, connect via Profibus to the 317 CPU. My first question is if is possible the conversion. If no, please give me some advice about how should I configure the network in order to work properly. Thanks in advance, Sergiu.

Especially I am not sure of how you intend to use a CP 342-5, which is a Profibus-DP communication processor, not MPI. It is possible to exchange data between a S7-300 PLC and S7-200 CPUs through MPI: How does data communication work between S7-300/S7- 400 and S7-200 via MPI using S7 basic communication? It is also possible to link S7-200 CPUs through PPI using NETR/NETWR instructions: How is data exchanged between two SIMATIC S7-200 devices in PPI mode? Since the S7 317-2DP has a reserve of 30 connections for S7 basic communications (see the first link above) I would propose to regroup the S7-200 in many small PPI networks, 5 or 6 together, sending their data to a concentrator S7-200, and then linking these concentrators to the S7 317-2DP over MPI, so the S7-300 CPU collects all the data form the S7-200. But the reason I can't implement this solution is because is preetty expensive, considering that I should use another 6-7 S7-200 CPU's. Another inconvenient to this solution is that using MPI network to the S7-300 CPU might not be enough because of it's baud rate limited at 187.5 Kb. It's my bad that I haven't specified the reason why I want to convert the network from MPI to Profibus. So, the reason is the limited baud rate from the MPI network. Also, I could use some MPI to Ethernet converter but I don't know the equipment that would do the work. Anyway, you answered my very first question. It is not posible to use theCP 342–5 for this conversion. I really hope you understand my point. Thanks again for your answer and maybe you could help me again with some solution. Sergiu.

Since PPI is a RS-485 network, you should be able to connect 30 of these PLC on a network, using Netr and Netwr instructions (there is also a Wizard in MicroWin to configure the exchanges). But since the PPI ports are not galvanicallyisolated there is a limitation on distance and speed: 9600 Baud and 50 m distance (without repeaters). so bear that in mind in your design. Let's examine the various options for interfacesin your application (i am calculating 5 or 6 subnetworks of S7-200, each headed by a data concentrator): - 1) purchase of 5 or 6 extra CPUs, each having 2 comm ports (CPU 224XP is the least expensive), acting as dataconcentrators on each subnet:most expensive of the options. - 2) purchase of 5 or 6 Ethernet interface processors (CP 243-1) for the data concentrators of each PPI network (one of the existing S7-200s) to connect to the S7-317 on its PN port; you will also need a switch.This is slightly less expensive than new CPUs. - 3) purchase of5 or 6Profibus-DP comm. processors (EM 277) to be used as slave modules on the data concentrators of each S7-200 subnetwork; this would allow for faster connections than MPI, and it would give the data concentrators an extra RS-485 (Profibus-DP) connection that would be required. We generally operate the bus at 1,5 MB, but it can go up to 12 MB for a max distance of 100 m. This solution would costless than half of the pprice of new CPUs, If you choose the third solution you will have the conversion from PPI to Profibus-DP that you seem to need, for higher transmission speeds than MPI, at a price that is lowest of the options. But you should ask for pricing from your local Siemns rep, as pricing will vary between countries. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier
