danw Gold Expert Joined: 3/28/2010 Last visit: 11/30/2024 Posts: 1090 Rating: (215)	It depends on what you mean by 'communicate'. PDM software is for setup, configuration and troubleshooting. But If you need to pull data, like level values, from the Multi 100 then you'd use the Modbus RTU protocol. I believe that the Multi100 has both an RS-232 port and RS-485 screw terminals for either hardware bus. For any cabling distance at all, use the 485, not the 232. There are a number of communications parameters that would have to be configured in the P770 range. The Multi100 is a Modbus slave, so whatever talks to it would have to be a Modbus master, typically some HMI panel or software. Dan

cncsparky Posts: 32 Rating: (2)	I am needing to up/download configuration and save offline. Is the cable USB one one end and RJ11 phone plug on the other? We are looking at stringing these, 8 or 9 of them, together through modbus to get levels into our plc system.

The DB9 end fits a typical PC serial port which nowadays is a USB/RS-232 converter with DB9. RJ11 fits the MultiRanger. For multiple units, you'll have to use RS-485, re-configure for Modbus. I don't know if the 232/485 serial ports can be different functions at the same time, Modbus on one, config on the other. I sort of doubt it, but I just don't factually know.

cncsparky Posts: 32 Rating: (2)	I got a quote from our local distributer, who we get the MultiRangers from. The PDM s/w was close, but the cable quote came back at $1172.00. I had them double check it too. Can the MultiRanger, cable, and s/w be purchased direct from Siemens in US? Or does it have to go through a distributer?
