new to LOGO and PLC, LOGO vs SIMATIC

During a 3-day PLC training class I was suggested to look into LOGO, as a first PLC system for a beginner. I would like to ask the following: Under what circumstances is it necessary to switch from a LOGO system to a system like SIMATIC S7-200 ? thank you, anyx

WBT + Simpole to lear and program + Ready to use funktion like On-delay, OF-dealy, Weekly timer, Yearly time, Astro-Clock, Random-Generator, ..... + Programming SW runs on Windows, Mac and Linux + Buy it one time and get free updates unlimited + Run on "normal" PC's Benefit for PLC: + fast and accurate + Interrupts + direct control "outside" of a cycle + faster counter, faster outputs + More complex (if you know how to program) I succest you to have a look to the LOGO! WBT. It is free of charge and you get an iontroduction how to use LOGO! and the news of LOGO! 8. Basically it depends on your application. There are some application you are not able to solve with LOGO! and you have to use a PLC (Stepper drives, Servos, Free communication protocolls, ....) For absolute beginners LOGO! is better if it fits to the application. Descripe your application and we may be able to make a sugestion what is better to use. Hope this helps

aenyx Posts: 3 Rating: (0)	Hello Helmut_13, thanks a lot for your explanation. application: we need to control three machines that will work in sequence. 1. A vibrating table that moves forward/backward. varible to control: frequency or speed of the oscillation. 2. A conveyor belt We would just turn it on/off. It is driven by a 10 HP induction motor 3. A hydraulic press we need to control the following: a. piston movement direction: forward / backward until it reaches a certain physical limit b. between the forward step and backward step there is a "holding time" in which the jack applies its full force. This time is a variable we need to set through the PLC. synchronization machines 1 and 2 work in tandem and feed machine 3. while machine 3 is in operation 1 and 2 stop and remain in stand by. once machine 3 is ready for a new feed, 1 and 2 start again. this happens 5 or 6 times until machine 3 is full and ready to eject the product. once ejected 1 and 2 start again does this sound like a job for a full PLC or a LOGO ? any suggestions are appreciated. thank you. anyx.

Helmut_13 Posts: 2930 Rating: (432)	Hi, this sounds not complicated. I believe no problem for LOGO!. The only challange I see for LOGO! is the part for your vibration tool. LOGO! has no pulsoutput. The frequency LOGO! can generate is for transistor outputs and depends on the scantime of LOGO!. Relays cannot be used for this part because of 0.5Hz and limited life time. As alternative an analog signal would be possibel if you can use it. Hope this helps
