PILearner Posts: 80 Rating: (1)	I got a siemens flow meter , a PH controller and a D.O Controller. I need to transfer the output signals from teh site to the company office so they could monitor it online. Is it possible? If Yes, then how could we do it. Best Regards Naeem Khan

You can monitor real time via MODBUS TCP or collect the datalogs via FTP or Email. The RD500 will allow a view of the process via the onboard Web sever. See attached part numbers for the RD500 and modules. The RD500 includes a 1GB CF card for datalogging. Attachment D:\tmp\upload\RD500.pdf (181 Downloads)

I want to know how are multiple devices using modbus connected to RD 500. are the different devices connected in parallel and connected to RD 500 . If that is the case then will the addressing for devices be done through RD 500 or on individual devices? Regards

To wit: It's a certainty that the RD500 is a Modbus RTU master that can use either or both the RS-232 and/or the RS-485/422 port to communicate to Modbus RTU slaves. The manual clearly shows an application for Modbus RTU using each port. That example does not cite a use of Modbus/TCP. A search for Modbus/TCP fails to bring up a hit in the manual. The 2012 catalog sheet (link in this thread) says "supports Modbus/TCP over Ethernet", but there is no mention of Modbus/TCP in the manual, and an FAQ posted with the RD500 states, "QUESTION: What communications options are available for my field instruments using the SITRANS RD500? ANSWER: Modbus ASCII or RTU on RS-485 and RS-232." Note the omission of Modbus/TCP. There is some provision for an OPC server, but there is no example in the manual for the OPC setup page. OPC likes to talk over ethernet, and the Modbus/TCP reference may be to the functioning of an OPC server (the RD500 would be Modbus slave to an OPC server). I don't have a RD500 and I haven't configured one. And it could very well be that having one might bring up more options than the manual shows. The manual is on the weak side as to options and choices for a device menu configured. But it wouldn't surprise me if Modbus/TCP is not really a feature. 2) >how are multiple devices using modbus connected to RD 500? The documented Modbus is Modbus RTU which is point-to-point for RS-232 (only one device) or multidrop (multiple devices) with RS-485. For Multidrop, the normal term for wiring is called "daisychain" which is a pair of wires strung from one device to the next, to the next, to the next and so on, (+) to (+) to (+), (-) to (-) to (-), effectively 'wiring in parallel'. Modbus RTU devices can not coexist with Modbus ASCII devices on the same network. ASCII and RTU need to be segregated on their own networks. 3) >will the addressing for devices be done through RD 500 or on individual devices? Both. Each device needs a unique address on the RS-485 network. Every Modbus RTU device has some means of configuring a slave node address. It might be DIP switch, rotary switch, jumpers, keyboard configuration or software configuration. The RD500 is a Modbus master and it has to know what the slave's address is when it queries a slave and asks for data. Part of the Modbus message is an address field. The example in the manual shows the 'node' field used for defining the slave node address in the RD500.
