The Simatic Net OPC Server is also able to connect to a S7 PLC through MPI/Profibus. So if the PC has a communication processor like CP5711 then the OPC Server could use it.

Of course Ethernet Is also possible.

The physical connection between the OPC server and the plc (or any other device) can be almost anything. That's the whole idea with the opc server. Connection between opc server and device can be some complex protocol running on some product-specific kind of wiring.

On the client side of the opc server you will find a standardized well documented interface that runs with almost anything that can act as an opc client.

This is almost correct !

On OPC Server Site a agree.

but a communication between a OPC Client and OPC Server has to be over ethernet.

With OPC DA it uses DCOM and Windows Platform and also in OPC UA it has to run with Ethernet (Its not important if you use Binary or XML or something else Webbased).
