I'm having to use an OPC Server (OPC-DA) to send tags to a client through PROFINET, using SIMATIC NET. Both TIA Portal (server) and SIMATIC NET (cliente) are v16.

I'm also using SCOUT v10, and when I connect to the server I can get all the DB's names that I have in my project, but I can't (by any means) see the tags (symbols) inside them.

Already tried following the default steps Siemens provide (and yes, I set visibility and writing in all symbols at TIA Portal), changing the versions to v17, and even tried Windows 11 as client.

Any suggestions?

First, it is important to know if the type of OPC server you want is Classic OPC DA or it is OPC UA DA?

Also, what cpu type do you want to access and is the DB optimized/non-optimized?

If it is a 1200/1500, optimized DB then this could be the reason you are not able to access the datablock variables.

In that case you need to use OPC UA server.

The DB's are all non optimized, so this is not a problem. 

But how do I know if I'm using just OPC UA or if I'm using OPC UA DA? In my project, I have a CPU 1515F-2 PN.

You need to start by knowing which type of OPC the client can commuicate.

Then in Simatic Net you can open the "Communication Settings" and go to "OPC settings -> OPC protocol selection" and select for which protocol you want to allow which type of OPC.

The column "COM/DCOM" is the classic OPC, and "OPC UA" is (obviously OPC UA).

If OPC Server v17 is inserted in the project, then no opc items is in "Local COM server -> OPC.SimaticNET -> \SYM:" (classic opc).

So... is that the OPC protocol you need (Classic OPC)?

What OPC protocol does the client "speak"? Classic OPC or OPC UA?

If it only can communicate Classic OPC, then you need to change the "OPC Server" to v8.2 in the TIA project as mentioned in my previous post.

I got to create the connection the right way after I changed the OPC server version to v8.2.

After that, I placed the IE General and the OPC Server in the right slots in the PC with SIMATIC NET and it worked smoothly. Not even needed the XDB file.
