Hello newman; OPC is a simple exchange interface between programs running under Windows OS, either on the same computer [using COM] or between remote computers [using DCOM] interfaces. Before OLE you had to develop specific software drivers in order to access data between a communication software and a HMI program, for example. Now you simly provide an OPC server (an interface presenting a "menu" of available data on one unit) and an OPC client (an interface requesting specific data) so exchanges can be configured. This is much simpler for the user, as he only has to select data from an OPC server (acting as a client) and does not have to take care of the basics of the communication link. And it allows software from different manufacturers to communicate with as little hastle as possible. Here is a link to a (very) basic presentation of OPC exchanges, but with interesting links you can follow for deeper study: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLE_for_process_control AttachmentOPC_E.pdf (176 Downloads) |

Hello Daniel.... ... you have a rather large variety of manuals at your hand, don't you. I fear I would have to search some time to get a comparable document. Personally I would prefer the latest versions at: Industrial Communication with PG/PC Volume 1 - Basics System Manual In chapter 3 the OPC Server is also explained some... surely not in the same detail as it was in your manual... but maybe with some additional information regarding the newest protocols.
