H.SAPER Bronze Member Joined: 11/12/2008 Last visit: 3/12/2025 Posts: 221 Rating: (16)	Hi, I'm new programmer in opc communication, So why I need to connect WinCC 7.0 to ModiCon PLC via OPC server, despite I can connect it via Ethernet Direct connection ( Direct connection means direct addressing ). I hope my inquiry is clear. Thanks.

Rated X Posts: 1547 Rating: (129)	Hi, in general: To connect two station you must find the same "language" to communicate and understand the partner.So you have to compare which "languages" (Protocol drivers for WinCC)are available for WinCC and for Modicon. If you find an implementation on both sides you can use it for communication. If there is no match on WinCC you can use OPC as translation interface and use an OPC Server from third party to implement the "language" on PC card. The WinCC will be OPC client to connect to third party OPC Server. Third party OPC will talk to partner station (Modicon). I hope now it is a little bit clearer. In your case it seems to be that there is Modbus TCP the same language. MODBUS TCP is available as additional protocol driver which is not free of charge and you have to order it by order number, or you use the OPC way with third party.
