Physical connectivity between WinCC and SAP

Each is Monitoring / controlling one section of the plant. Presently all Production data reports are being generated using User archives at individual stations. Now the customerhas decided to go in for a SAP ERP based system for the complete plant. For the purpose of exchaging Production Plan data from SAP -> WinCC and Actual Production Data from WinCC -> SAP, we plan to link all the winCC stations over ethernet and then hook them up to the SAP system. I have 2 queries on this linking up : a) For the physical connection , shouldthe LAN network connecting all 15 WInCC stations be directly connected to the SAP LANor should we provide some kind of a Gateway / or Firewall in between. ?( I amuncomfortable about connecting the WinCC LAN without any firewall in between. b) For Data Connectivity, would it be better for SAP to hook up to each individual WinCC station (WithWinCC Connectivity packs in each station ) or would it be better to install a central server which collects data from all WinCC stations over OPC ? Would it be better to do infor a DAT server or Connectivity pack or both ( in this case ) ? Thanks Navnag

J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (412)	Dear Navnag, to admit, I have no clue about interfacing WinCC to SAP. In my mind you need tools from the MES layer to interface both. The only set of tools I know of which provide such services would be SIMATIC IT, but as said... it is not my fundamental knowledge about it. Seen from the Network Security the use of a Firewall or Bridge is always recommendable. Not only to prevent unauthorized access to the WinCC Systems by anybody but also prevent all the Multi- and Broadcast communication form the Office network to enter the automation network. It also has "Centers of Competence" in various cities in Germany that specialize in specific products and applications. The Center of Competence Mannheim produces add-on products for WinCC, including someting called "PN-Open Host/S" which proposes connectivity of WinCC to SAP R/3.
