I was unaware that Portal V12 SP1 officially supported Windows 8 (and 8.1) According to Siemens documentation (found here https://www.industry.siemens.com/topics/global/en/tia-portal/controller-sw-tia-portal/simatic-step7-professional-v11/system-requirements/Pages/Default.aspx): Supported Operating systems
