I'm battling to get a usable solution for dynamic tag usage on trend views for Wincc Advanced;

I've considered/tried/altered the majority of recommendations regarding multiple trends displayed in one trend view. 

Since some of these recommendations stretch back to 2013, I thought its time to reconsider the topic in case there has been new developments.

What is a practical way of trending (realtime/archive) 500+ tags on WinCC advanced/comfort on one TrendView?

-Dynamization not possible on TrendView, nor does it have TrendIndex/TrendVisible properties that you can change via VBS.

-f(x) trend view has Indexing and trend specific visibility, but this control is not intended for historical data

- Trends cannot be be included in your faceplates.

To my mind, the unfortunate but best option you have is to create n+logs, copy them to an indexed log when a change in index int has been detected. 

This seemed like a decent solution a few years ago, is this still the way to go?

I suppose the requirement is indeed closer to SCADA than the capabilities of Advanced.
