Hello rRajkiran; This is a question that has been debated often on the forum, just search for the terms MPI Profibus here and you will find many psots on the subject. But basically MPI and Profibus-DP look and workalike because MPI is actually a subset of Profibus specs, with these important differences: -speed: MPI can exchange data at 187,5 kBps on PLCs, Profibus-DP can reach 12 MBps; -distance: since MPI ports are not isolated, the maximum distance allowed without a repeater is 50 m, whereas Profibus-DP can be extended to 1,2 km. -number of nodes: an MPI network is limited to 32 nodes; Profibus-DP can have 32 nodes per segment, and a total of 125 nodes using repeaters. -configuration: MPI does not handle master-slave comms, only peer-to-peer (CPUs, HMI, PGs); Profibus-DP is natively designed for high-speed master-slave exchanges, although peer-to-peer exchanges can easiily be programmed. There is much more information availableon the Communications compendium if you care to look at it.: Communication with SIMATIC S7 Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier |
