If you need to SELECT the instruments, most of vendors have different options of communication capabilities and you can choose. If you ALREADY HAVE field instruments, you need to choose PLC/BUS components accordingly. Please specify the task more detailed, and everybody here will be glad to help you.

To Select the Instruments Communication type you need to discuss the same with your Instrument supplier . Profibus networking is more prpular for interfacing Remote I/Os , Controllers , Drives etc with relatively large amount of data per device. Usually PA instruments are polular in process control applications where large no of field instruments are installed with small amount of data per device. Networking pf PA Devices is easier as bus splitters can be used. For more information regarding Profibus DP and PA pl see dchartier's post in the Thread : Profibus DP & PA dchartier The physical layer of Profibus-DP is RS-485, for Profibus-PA it is MBP (Manchester-coded, Bus Powered). See the techniacal description available from Profibus.com: http://www.profibus.com/nc/download/technical-descriptions-books/downloads/profibus-technology-and-application-system-description/display/These are not compatible, so you must have a gateway between the 2 networks. You must use a DP/PA coupler to connect a PA slave to a DP network. Siemens DP/PA couplers bring down the DP network speed to 45,45 kBaud (for all slaves on the DP bus; you would need a DP/PA link to operate at 12 MB on the DP side). P&F DP/PA couplers bring the DP network down to 93,5 kB. But in the following discussion our friend fritz present a new solution from Procentec that allows the DP network to operate at 1,5 MB: DP/PA Coupler and DP/PA Link Since you need couplers for your application, choose based on price, availability and usefulness.
