Allow me to clarify Rated X's statement that "you can use Profibus PA in areas where fires or explosions would happen, because it is intrinsically safe" to make sure it does not lead to confusion and/or the (incorrect) assumption that anything PA is by default intrinsically safe: Profibus PA supports theFISCO model (Fieldbus Intrinsically Safe COncept) and as suchpermits usage in Ex areas. It is however the users responsibilty to ensure correct equipment selection and compliance and NOT all Profibus PA equipment (be it PA Couplers, devices, terminators etc.) is suitable for usage in Ex enviroments (e.g. Siemens has standard PA couplers for usage of PA in non hazardous areas as well asEx rated PA couplers which you'd use if your PA Network extends into a hazardous area). Anyhow, best place to gain an idea how PA works and what to look out for if it is to be usedin potentially explosive areas is the PROFIBUS PA User and Installation Guideline. |
