I have been trying a couple of unmanaged Moxa & Siemens X-100 switches in a PN network, just for fun.

I find that my IM modules always complain of the wrong parter port being detected, as though the switches are not completely transparant. I have tried putting nothing in but the two devices (so IM1 and IM2 are the only things on the switch) and I still get the same error.

I put a couple of fiber media convertors in with TL enabled and there was no issue.

So... why does a 'standard' unmanaged switch give errors? What exactly does enabling TL on the media convertor do ("Transparant Link") and is it ever worth while using an unmanged switch in a PN network in real life, when you could have various devices 'star-ed' off?

are you projecting the topology?

Maybe the "cheap switches" do not support the LLDP that is used for topology relationships.

Seems to suggest that so long as you leave the unmanaged switch out of the HW config it should be ok. However, my understanding of networking is very limited.

EDIT - just reread my own link. Yep - you are correct.
