PROFINET devices on ETHERNET LAN

458italia Posts: 2 Rating: (0)	Hi All, I’m a newby on this forum and ,overall, in industrial networks. We are going to install new PLC siemens based on PROFINET communication standard. Honestly I haven’t experience on PROFINET network and so I would like to know if are we going to have possible issues to plug these PLC s over a standard Ethernet LAN based on cables CAT6 shielded and switched by HP Procurve? Our PLC provider is asking for a PRofinet network based on SIEMENS cable 6XV1 840-2AH10 that seems to be an Ethernet cable: cable 6XV1 840-2AH10 - SIMATIC NET, IE FC TP STANDARD CABLE, GP 2X2 (PROFINET TYP A) TP INSTALLATION CABLE FOR CONNECTION TO FC OUTLET RJ45, FOR UNIVERSAL APPLICATION, 4-WIRE, SHIELDED, CAT. 5 Do our LAN support PROFINET standards? Many thanks in advance.

Although Industrial Ethernet and Standard Ethernet components can be used together, the Industrial Ethernet devices are more sturdy and therefore better suited for industrial environments (temperature, immunity to interference, etc.) ● Use of TCP/IP and IT standards ● Automation of applications requiring real time. ● Total integration of field bus systems PROFINET as the Ethernet-based automation standard of PROFIBUS International defines a cross-vendor communication, automation, and engineering model. With PROFINET IO a switching technology is implemented that allows all stations to access the network at any time. In this way, the network can be used much more efficiently through the simultaneous data transfer of several nodes. Simultaneous sending and receiving is enabled through the full-duplex operation of Switched Ethernet. PROFINET IO is based on Switched Ethernet full-duplex operation and a bandwidth of 100 Mbps. J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (412)	Hello, actually I would say a CAT6 cable is no problem with PROFINET or industrial Ethernet at all. The only thing to consider is that the PLC's should not be located in EMC contaminated areas... especially with your office network CAT 6 cable. If you want a more secure network I would recommend the use of SIMATIC NET Cable you mentioned already. About the used SWITCH I would say it depends on the restrictions set in the Switch. If you do not use VLANs or restrictions like the number of connected devices on a port... or the transfer of Prio 6 frames... or frames with the PROFINET ID... I see no problem. Good luck J_Bell

458italia Posts: 2 Rating: (0)	Hello, Many thanks for you feed back. About the switch, I'd like to use VLANs, just to isolate PLCs network traffic from PC traffic. All PLC will be work inside an "industrial" VLAN without exchange data to other VLANs. Can It be a problem?
