PROFINET vs Ethernet on a 315-2 PN/PD

I have searched, but to tell the truth, I find the terminology around PROFINET, Ethernet, TCP/IP, etc to be confusing. Here is my situation: I have a client who has specified a 315-2 PN/DP CPU only. They do not have any CP module available. They intend to communicate with an existing CANBus network. To do so, they have purchased from ESD Electronics a CAN-Ethernet gateway (part no. C.2050.02). My dilemma: How to setup the hardware definition and/or network definition (using NetPro) so that this communication will work? The vendor of the CAN-Ethernet gateway does not seem to have a GSD file for the device. That being said, it is not clear whether I need a GSD file in this instance. Generally speaking, can the 315-2 PN/DP have it's PN-IO element setup for standard Ethernet communications? I did find the "Open Communication Wizard" tool, and tested it out. That seems to generate the appropriate UDT or DB structure, and also define the required default values. You evidently then leverage the UDT/DB in calls to FB64, FB65, and FB66 (and others, perhaps). I have not been able to test this on a live system, so it is not clear to me that it works in practice, or what sort of "data" is received. Any information would be appreciated! Cheers, -ne

Kaulquappe Posts: 3093 Rating: (323)	Hello ne, Ethernet is the physic, PROFINET, TCP/IP and so on are protocol descriptions. As I can see from the ESD description, the gateway you mentioned supports the protocols TCP/IP and ModbusTCP. So you can setup a TCP/IP communication by using the T-blocks of the standard library or you can use ModbusTCP for PN CPUs, this is a Simatic AddOn order no. 2XV9 450-1MB02. Note: when using the Ethernet interface of the CPU the connection is not parameterized in NETPRO but defined in the UDT which is usedby TCON. Regards, Kaulquappe

Let me summarize what you seem to have said, just to be sure: I can utilize the RJ45 connector on my 315-2 PN/DP CPU to connect to an existing Ethernet network. To set this up, I need only define an IP address for my PN-IO element. No other HM Config or NetPro configuration is required. Communications are then handled by TSEND (FB63), TRCV (FB64), TCON (FB65), and TDISCON (FB66). Function TCON (FB65) requires for the CONNECT input a pointer to a datablock that is derived from a properly defined UDT. The "Open Communication Wizard" is designed to assist with this UDT. Among other things, this UDT defines "rem_staddr", which contains the IP address of the device to be communicated with. Does this sound correct? Thanks again! -ne

And if you have some troubles with settings look at How do you program the communication blocks FB63 "TSEND", FB64 "TRCV", FB65 "TCON" and FB66 "TDISCON" in order to use the TCP protocol for data exchange via the integrated Industrial Ethernet interface of an S7-300 or S7-400 CPU?
