Although your point which says that DI card itself can support upto 2khz is nice to know. I will discuss the same with the client and if their is high price difference between both the modules i think DI would be a better option. anwyays i need to check their frequency requirement first. Ayman Elotaify Platinum Member Joined: 5/28/2008 Last visit: 5/30/2023 Posts: 4446 Rating: (827)	Hello Pratapks, You can also have a look on the following module *6ES7321-7BH01-0AB0* SIMATIC S7-300, DIGITAL INPUT SM 321, GALVANICALLY ISOLATED, 16 DI, DC 24V, 20 PIN, PROCESS INTERRUPT, DIAGNOSTICS, FIT FOR ISOCHRONE MODE 287.00EUR It's not expensive and it can work as fast input. you can use it as hardware interrupt. In this case you will need to program OB40 and/or OB40 to OB47 in according of the CPU used. It is a synchrionisation concept between Profibus cycles and PLC cycles so that you can minimise the delays in I/O processing. Another use of the same concept, used in Profidrive applications, is called "Isochronous Real-time". Let's say you decide to use a Digital Input card for counting your pulses.Since these are just DI modules, you will have to put your "counting logic" in CPU. Now, (assuming that you manage to achieve very fast Profibus DP cycles) in a typical PCS7 application it is difficult to put any logic in CPU with scan cycles less than 200ms. So if your software counter is in 200ms cycle, it puts the pulse counting capacity of your system to only 2.5 Hz. Even if you put just your counting logic in 10ms OB it gives you a possibility to count a maximum of 50 pulses per second (50Hz). So even though the digital modules can recognize inputs at 2kHz, you will be able to count only at max 50Hz. (However, for all practical purpose I will consider the capacity as 2.5 Hz) Please do keep in this mind before deciding whether you use a DI card or a counter function module for your application.
