Question about IM modules

How many modules (analog, digital etc.) can be connected on one rack and how to know when is the timeto use IM module? Also I would like to learn to use correct terminology, so feel free tocorrect me every time possible. Is it correct to say that IM is used to connect two or more racks? Thank you very much.

When you need more than 8 I/O cards, you will have to use an IM. There are two possibility's: IM365: You can only use 1 expanding rack And not all I/O cards are allowed. IM360 and IM361, you can use 3 expanding racks. You need one IM360 in the mean rack and every expanding rack needs an IM361. Best regards, Wizard

The S7-300 is not a fixed-width platform like Allen-Bradley or GE Fanuc. Some S7-300 modules take up the physical space of two slots (FM350-2, 32-pt. output modules, etc). So while you may find slots 4-8 are suitable for your I-O needs - check to be sure you have the physical room for the modules you are using.

Hi Pandiani, Which IM-modules do you mean, the IM 360/361, the IM 365, the IM 153-1, the IM 153-2, the IM 151-1 Standard, the IM 151-1 HF..... With the IM 360/361 and the IM 365 you may build up more racks (until 3)behind the CPU-rack. Whit the IM 153-1/2 you might built up 125 slaves all with 8 or 12 modules behind it. With the newest ones that will come soon you may use 12 modules behind the IM 153-2BA02, please consider that you may not use more then 244 byte In- and Out-put. There are also on Profinet now the standard modules, they can also have 12 modules behind the IM, there is more dataspace available.

I thought at first that numbers of I/O modules is not limited just by length of rack, but features of backplane, otherwise some kind of appendix would be used. Then, I have read that FM module Mojo mentioned tkes up physical space of two modules and now I think that length of the rack is primary reason. I'll download and read chapter Wizard proposed. AlsoI assume that all these informations are valid for S7-400 as well, right? Thanks!

Hello Pandiani, For Profibus the amount of modules could be 8 for the older IM's and for the newer ones it is 12(6ES7153-2BA02-0AB0). The restriction is that you may not have more then 244 byte in- and output... For Profinet the newest modules for ET200M are direct to be used with 12 modules, there is also more length of bytes possible. For the S7-400 it is also that the ET 200M DP or ET 200M PN have the same restrictions as for the S7-300.
