Hello taratata40; Well, a lot of the answers available will depend on the selected PLC platform. You have not mentionned what level of CPU you have selected (S7-200 or S7-300/400), or even if you are working with Siemens PLCs. Modbus is not natively supported by Siemens PLCs (the same level of networking is taken over by Profibus) but libraries can be imported to use serial ports as ModbusRTUmaster or slave, and in some cases Modbus ASCII; Modbus TCP is also available on S7-300/400 CPUs. S7-200 System manual, Ch. 12, Using Modbus: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/1109582 S7-300/400 Modbus RTU master manual: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/1220184 S7-300/400 Modbus RTU slave manual: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/1218007 S7-300 Modbus ASCII master and slave: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/25362836 S7-300/400 "Open ModbusTCP" information http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/22660304 Ethernet is supported by all Siemens PLCs (S7-200 as well as S7-300/400), either on integrated Profinet ports, or through dedicated CPs (communication processors). Have a look at this Simatic Net Quick start webpage, that shows the different options for Ethernet communications (and their Function Blocks). https://www.automation.siemens.com/net-static/Quickstart2009/quickstart012003/html_76/ethernet/ethernet.htm Look at this link on Siemens Industrial Communications, it could also help, along with the attached illustration omf Siemens' automation pyramid concept: https://www.automation.siemens.com/mcms/automation/en/industrial-communications/Pages/Default.aspx?HTTPS=REDIR Sorry that I cannot give you much more information for the moment, as your question is admitedly very vague. Come back with specifics and forum members qill be happy to provide more insight. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier |
