Retain option in IEC Timer

Mo.Sa Silver Member Joined: 8/1/2012 Last visit: 1/3/2023 Posts: 174 Rating: (14)	hello everybody I enabled the Retain option in IEC_Timer's DB.but I have a problem,when I change the cpu mode to STOP the timer will not stop when I change the cpu mode to RUN ,I see the timer dosen't continue the time that the cpu went to stop!! for example ET's timewas 2 Minute ,I changed the cpu to stopafter 3 Minute I changed it to RUN I see the ET is 5Minute I want to when I change the cpu from stop to run the timer continue the latest time that the cpu went to stop .what shouldI do??

In the very last scan of your program logic, copy the current elapsed timer value to a retained memory location. On first scan, copy that retained tag to the elapsed time of the timer. I have not run into this situation before, or if I did, all my methods worked without caring about the cpu mode.

0_Einstein Diamond Expert Joined: 7/7/2010 Last visit: 1/27/2023 Posts: 13080 Rating: (2124)	I cannot simulate the problem because I only use S7-1200 PLCs with the portal basic software. These PLCs stop the timers when the PLC enters stop mode, at least that has been my experience in many tests over the last couple of years. Perhaps you could use a different scheme for timing of aggregated events like you describe where the time must be additive. Have a timer or counter or multiple of timers/counters count minutes and just have 60s timers that pulse the counters, then reset and start over again. When your plc stops and restarts, you would have retained those counter values and would know how many minutes had been counted. If the timer resets, you could save the timer.ET value after the timer updates, and adjust the preset to be 60-saved_timer_ET_value for the first run of the timer, then reset to 60 after that first run. Hope this makes sense. I cannot get the odd problem to appear with the timer to run even when the plc is in stop mode.
