Hello everyone,

I'm working on a project to automate several lab equipment. Most of them have analog I/O but one equipment, a IKA LR 1000 reactor, have only a rs232 port.

I use a S7-315-2 PN/DP with TIA-Portal V13.

In the IKA documentation I found some good information on page 17 and 18 they talk about the commands that I need to send.

I've never done a RS232 communication before that so can you please help me on which device I need to use and how can I program it in TIA Portal.

RS 232 is a kind of point to point communication. Physically it has 3 wires. one to send (Tx), one to receive(Rx) and one ground(GRD/COM)

Normally it is easy to establish. You have to set the same parameters on each side. you can see the parameters to set in the screenshot.

if I can give some my opinion, you can add RS-232 module like MOP suggested. Other solution due your PLC is use PN (Ethernet) port for this communication with propper converter Ethernet to RS-232. All depends to your situation. Difference is that with RS-232 module you create from scratch serial communication's instructions code, but with that use of PN port on CPU you prepare TCP client connection to that server connverter. Other bussiness to RS-232 is side of that converter, so you prepare same system like with RS-232, but with TCP instructions. You can get your experience on that level also. It's your choice. If I can return to that RS-232 system with CP340 module, probably will be set ASCII protocol not 3964 and same communication settings like Device needs, this is basic. So pls start study this recommendations and look at this forum topics about RS-232 or TCP communication depended to your choice. Yes in that documentation are pages 17,18,19 important, page 19 posts cable requirement, so look that this isn't simple cable with only TX,RX,GND but also 2 wires of RTS,CTS signals. Don't hesitate ask us for another questions.

Update: you've said that you're working on several stations, this means that for every you'll prepare it's own PLC or what is situation?

So basically, there is only one of the equipment that doesn't have analogic I/O so I don't have other choice than a RS232 communication. So I'll have only one PLC for the line. I'm still thinking if i'll use a S7-1200 or S7-1500.
