RS232C communication with IMC5510

V4Friend Advanced Member Joined: 11/30/2007 Last visit: 2/20/2025 Posts: 44 Rating: (1)	Hello Experts (and all), I am trying to get communication going between a Siemens 1SI module (138-4DF01-0AB0) and a 3rd party device, namely an IMC5510. The goal is to get bidirectional communication: the PLC must send ASCII strings to the IMC5510 and then the IMC responds. I have tested the IMC with both it's own software and hyperterminal and that works fine. I am using the example-code and block for the 1SI and I have read the manual quite thoroughly. The S_SEND function responds with "OK", so data is sent to the 1SI without problem. However, the data does not arrive in the IMC5510 (nor hyperterminal, if I connect that). I think the problem is in the cable or the 1SI settings, so I decided to ask here. The pin-layout for the IMC5510 is very simple: RX, TX and ground. I found the "terminal assignment" for the 1SI in the manual, but that only describes the situation where a 9-pin SUB-D connector is used (with all 8 signals connected). Obviously, I can only connect 3 signals of the 1SI (RxD, TxD and ground). What should I do with the other terminals? Is it necessary to bridge some of them, to get data flowing? Thanks in advance.

But what you say is: you do not have to connect any of the other terminals, if you just want RX, TX and Ground?

SolutionFinder Posts: 559 Rating: (87)	Dear V4Friend, The cable you are using must be same as you have tested with Hyperterminal with IMC. For connection please find the attached copy of RS-232 Pin Description & 1SI module pin details. You just connect the cable to SI module as you have connected to PC for hyperterminal. SolutionFinder Posts: 559 Rating: (87)	Check your string also. If your sending ASCII string via Hyperterminal than are getting reply after pressing "Enter" Key? If yes the you also have send string from your SI module after your string & then send character for "Enter" also. Try it out it must work.

I just logged in again and found all of them at the same go... I will try your suggestions today. So much to do in so little time :-) Edit: OK, I found a different cable, connected RX, TX and ground to the 1SI and now things are working. I must admit: the connector on the PC-side (9-pin female SUB-D) has bridges between terminal 1,4,6 and 7,8. I don't know if things will still work if I would remove them...
